Social Media, Can You Live Without It?

Alex Goldman of InternetNews.com writes “Salesforce Taps Into Twitter”, he goes on to say, “Customer contact centers have moved far beyond the phone, says Salesforce, embracing Facebook, Twitter, and other Web applications.”

I have been preaching the value of online social media tools for over a year. I have been hawking the tools needed to grow your business via social media to our customers for months. The writing is on the wall……. Grow with the times or they leave you behind.
More and more companies and consumers are turning to

the web for answers to their questions. Newspapers, phone books and call centers are slowly being overrun by Google, Twitter, Facebook and Yahoo.

Alex Goldman of InternetNews.com also quoted on one company I am sure you have never heard of… Comcast! What would you think if I told you Comcast has been on Twitter since last April? What would you think if I told you Comcast has a team of 4 people dedicated to social media, and has one person online at any time to monitor it? Have any doubts?

“We’ve been on Twitter since last April,” said Comcast director of digital care Frank Eliason, who is participating in Salesforce’s press and analyst day in New York today. He said that the company has a team of four people for social media and at least one of them is online at any time.

Have I converted you into a believer yet? No? Well let’s discuss some of the benefits of social media.

1.) You can get your message out faster. Social media sites like Twitter and Facebook allow real time updates. Watch how fast your new blog posting gets out to your followers. The first thing I do after writing is post updates to my Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Ping and LinkedIn accounts.

2.) Have your message reach more people. Do you remember the old commercial,”…and I told 2 friends, and they told 2 friends, and so on, and so on…” Social Media sites takes those 2 friends and turns it into thousands. “I told my 200 connections, and they told their 200 connections each, who in turn told their 200 connections each, and so on and so on…”

3.) Improve your branding. Social Media and blogging can greatly enhance your product awareness and image.

4.) Improve Search Engine Optimization and SEM. Many social media tools – such as use of common key phrases, title tags, and links can dramatically improve search engine rankings. SEO and SEM also rely on the main search engines to get your website out and noticed, adding social media sites to your network and updates doubles the impact and searchability. Not to mention the link back opportunities that can happen.

Online social media is growing so fast the only answer is to grow with it!
